Capturing the Light – My Work in the U3A Summer Exhibition

I'm pleased to be taking part in this year’s U3A Yate & Sodbury Art Group Summer Exhibition, which runs from 6 to 23 June at Yate Library. It’s always a pleasure to exhibit with fellow members of our lively art group. The atmosphere is supportive, encouraging, and full of shared enthusiasm for making art.
This year, the group is showing over 30 pictures, most of which are available for sale. There will usually be someone from the group on hand to chat with visitors. The exhibition reflects the breadth of our members' interests and styles – from beginners to more experienced artists, and in media ranging from watercolours and oils to mixed media and drawing.
I’ve contributed three new paintings, all featuring local sunrise views from Sodbury Common, a place I often walk early in the morning. The light at that time of day can be dramatic. Sometimes it is soft and golden, other times stark and misty. I’m particularly drawn to the shifting colours and long shadows cast across the familiar landscape. Each painting attempts to capture that fleeting moment when the light breaks across the horizon, awakening everything.

While painting is a personal pursuit, being part of the U3A group adds another dimension. We meet weekly to paint, share ideas and support each other’s progress – and exhibitions like this give us a chance to step outside our comfort zones and show our work to the public. It’s great to be involved with a group that is both social and creative, and to have the opportunity to be part of something bigger in our local community.
If you're in the area, do drop in to the library and have a look – and if you visit on a weekday or Saturday morning, there’s a good chance someone from the group will be there to say hello.
