2024 in Paint: A Year of Artistic Exploration and Inspiration

Updated: Nov 11

2024 has been an great year filled with experiences that have inspired my art and pushed my creativity. Here’s a look at some of the highlights:

En Plein Air in Wales and Beyond

In June, I embarked on my first art holiday, painting en plein air amidst the stunning landscapes of Wales. This trip was organized by Alpha Painting Holidays and led by the talented tutor Paul Oakley of Pewsey Vale Studio. The experience provided new challenges and joys, especially in capturing scenes directly on location. We painted in picturesque spots such as Raglan Castle below.

We also painted at the River Wye near Tintern, Monmouth, and St Briavels. Working outdoors with limited materials helped me hone my skills and quickly capture the essence of these remarkable locations before adding finishing touches in my studio.

March in St Ives

A very enjoyable week in picturesque St Ives with it's great beaches, coastal walks and exciting art scene. Aside from enjoying local pasties we visited Tate St Ives (dull and uninspring), the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden (stunning) and the Bernard Leach Pottery (small but very interesting and some great pots for sale). Plus there are numerous local galleries that are well worth a visit - more so that the very tired Tate (except the coffee shop with great views over St Ives).

River Boat Adventure in Southern France

A river boat holiday in the south of France was another highlight. This trip provided countless photo opportunities, particularly in Arles—the very town where van Gogh created many of his most famous works and attended the hospital. The history and vibrant atmosphere of Arles were a huge source of inspiration.

Inspirational Walks in Wales

This year, I also joined two memorable walks with my personal trainer and her group: one to Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Wales, and another along the Four Waterfalls Walk in Brecon. Both experiences were very motivating, offering breathtaking landscapes, sweeping views, and the thrill of rapidly changing weather conditions. One highlight was creating and selling a painting of Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, the lower fall of the White Meadow—a testament to the beauty and power of these natural scenes.

Return to Rhodes

Our annual visit to Rhodes once again filled me with inspiration. The charm of Lindos and its timeless scenery provided plenty of photos that I’ll use as references for future works.

Autumn in Lyme Regis

The coastal town of Lyme Regis in the autumn was perfect for capturing the interplay of sea and town life. I completed two seascapes during our stay, each reflecting the dynamic light and movement of the ocean.

Exhibitions and Community

This year was also rewarding in terms of showcasing my work. I exhibited at Yate Library with my U3A art group, the Wotton Art Show, and the Yate Open at the Heritage Centre. Additionally, our U3A art group held two en plein air sessions at local churches, encouraging members to paint in an inspiring outdoor setting.  For more about the art group click here.

Art Exhibitions in 2024

A visit to the Expressionist exhibition at the Tate Modern provided further creative fuel. Seeing early Kandinsky works and the vibrant art of Franz Marc in person was a profound experience that left a lasting impact on my approach to colour and composition.  Hoping to make it soon to the Van Gogh and Monet exhibitions in London.
